It seems like we all just want to make a difference in this world, but I wonder, don’t we have enough differences? There is a shiny allure in the differences between us. Seeing what makes you different from another is most likely the first thing you notice; but it’s not the only thing.
It doesn’t require much to see what makes you different from another; but it does require a lot of imagination to understand sameness. You can imagine being The Pope, The King of England, or even The President of the United States. You’ve seen enough images of them in the news or documentaries to imagine their public personas. But imagine their private lives. Think of what worries them. Think of ordinary things they do like brushing their teeth, passing gas, or making jokes with family. Most of what makes them who they are is exactly like you – vulnerable and curious creatures who want to be loved and heard. You have a public and a private side. Most of you is private. Privacy is hidden, but we must imagine penetrating those boundaries. We only seem to see the facades and it goes no further.
When you begin to see the Oneness in All Things, you become a difference maker. True revolutionaries find common bonds, softening the edges of uniqueness and amplifying the warmth of being human. Rabble-rousers amplify differences between people and never seem to be able to make a difference in the world. Today’s politicians perpetuate the status quo – bickering and making enemies out of people who are just like they are. Today’s world is obsessed and blinded by the illusion of differences. Those “fighting for the individual” are not making much of a difference in this world are they? It will be those who see the Oneness of All Things who will make the biggest difference in our ailing world.
