I don’t know how I ended up where I am today. Have you ever heard someone say that? When you chase down the “how,” and you try to deconstruct it and reverse engineer it, you’re left scratching your head. The how-to mystery is unexplainable.
How did you learn how to play the piano? You might say you “worked really hard.” But does that explain how you learned? Your first lesson, you played. How did you learn to drive? On your first lesson, you drove, but how is still a mystery. How’d you get those eyes you have? They just are!
I have no idea how I got tenure and promotion at the university level. They just seemed to come naturally by virtue of what good work I was doing. I don’t know how it happened, so if someone were to ask me how I got tenure, I’d say, “dunno.” I was enthusiastic, loved my work, and I was promoted. It happened because it was a natural extension of who I was.
No-one can tell you how to attract a mate, how to paint a picture, or how to build a business. How something happens is simply a byproduct of you being at your best. Your instincts lead you to choices and opportunities that fulfill the desires of your heart. The how-to is a natural unfolding of who you are. How to change your favorite color; how to earn a billion dollars; how to finally love Brussel sprouts once and for all; and how to change your sexual preference. If I could tell you “how” to do those things, I would be able to manipulate the foundations of what makes you you. Don’t worry about how you’re going to accomplish anything that’s ensouled within you. If it’s in you, it will become a reality. I can’t tell you how. It just is.
