Take the high road; stay up there, and don’t fall down.

Treading on the high road – what a glorious path! Up there, nothing gets under your skin. The high roaders glide. They hover and remain comported and free, no matter what happens on the low road, in the mire of gossip, petulance, and immaturity. When do you get knocked down to the low road? When you don’t get enough sleep and you start the day a little grumpy? When you’re in the slow line at the supermarket? When you check your email late in the day and someone needs something post haste? When the computer interrupts you to do an automatic update? When the copier breaks and you need that report, now? The world is full of low roaders, huffing and puffing at the slightest bother.

The high road is a piece of cake when everything is hunky-dory, when traffic flows and there aren’t any delays or obstructions. Boy, I wish I could stay the course when someone does something childish, unscrupulous, or mindlessly, like driving slowly in the left lane. I wish I could stay up there when someone is talking loudly on their phone in an elevator, being inconsiderate to others.

God is on the high road, He lives up there, in a perpetual state of forgiveness, no matter how foolish people are; in an everlasting state of love, no matter how vindictive people are; in an eternally-flowing serenity, no matter how worked up people are; and in a non-reactive, constant flow of creativity and goodness, no matter what the obstructions seem to be. Catch yourself, breathe serenely; be loving; be open and understanding, and you can stay on the high road and respond as necessary. If you can stay on the high road, the view from up there is sweet, while everyone else is caught up in what amounts to petulance. Don’t get pulled under – stay where your highest good can work its magic.
