If you’re lucky enough be a part of an activity that requires your undivided attention, then you know about the transcendent joy and peace of being in flow. In that moment of attentiveness, you lose all sense of time. You are suspended, transfixed in the formless nature of focus. When something wants to be expressed through you, it will consume your attention. Allow it through.
Love wants to be expressed through you. A romantic interest, for example, can sweep you off of your feet, and absorb your being into the whirlwind euphoria of blossoming love. Creativity wants to be expressed through you. That project you’re passionate about starting; that book you want to write; that venture you want to start – they all draw you into flow, a billowing of productivity, once a little momentum begins. Compassion wants to be expressed through you. That’s when you see a need, and you think deeply on how to meet that need, to solve that problem, or to improve that situation. The most effective responses happen while in flow, never in panic or desperation. Flow begins with focus. Focus is sharp, but relaxed; alert, but easy.
Respond to the present moment with great care. Listen to each and every sound as if you’re listening to music. Let every action be graceful and deliberate, like that of the most eloquent ballet dancer. Each sight is simply like watching a scene in a play – stay in your seat, don’t get involved in the drama if it arises, and just watch. The quality of each moment is inextricably tied with the quality and focus of your attention. Flow with and merge into the present moment, and let what wants to be expressed through you come into being. You’re a free-flowing agent of your spirit. Get out of its way, and let it work through you. Focus, relax, and enter the joy of flow.
