You don’t need to make sense out of everything – just make sense out of yourself.

One of the most overused cliche’s is “Everything happens for a reason.” But how many times has this logic made you feel any better about yourself or the horrific things that we do to each other? If everything did happened for a reason, how could we ever “know” the definitive reason? And is reason what you seek? I’m not sure it is. I think what we seek, in search of reason, isn’t “out there.” It’s internal. You may or may not be directly responsible for everything that happens to you; but the hunger to make sense of the world is not conceptual. Discomfort, or unease that you may have in your existence as a human, cannot be relieved with a fact, a belief, or a concept that answers the question, “How could this happen?” You’ll search for “answers,” but you’ll find nothing but an empty echo chamber.

You cannot logic with reality, nor can you dismiss it as mysterious, random, or “God’s will.” All you can do is use experience as a means of self exploration. Shine the light of your search for reason, not outwardly, but inwardly. Logic won’t ever satisfy the hunger to know what you seek, in terms of “why?” Stop reasoning with reality, and stop playing private detective with the “why” of everyone else’s behaviors. What you find in others is mostly likely what you can find in yourself. If everything did happen for a reason, the only one that seems useful, is the one that motivates you to take a closer look at yourself, your actions, and your contributions to the chaos in the world. There’s more in the power of self discovery than there is in finding an external “why” in everything that happens in the world. A slight shift of focus onto yourself, in your search for answers, will make a huge difference in the quality of life on the planet.
