Self-assessment involves examining all aspects of your life, and simply asking, “Do I really want this?” Apply that kind of scrutiny to everything you do from choosing an outfit, to selecting a life partner. Discern if your choices make you feel alive, joyful, and free, or if those choices feel ordinary, compulsive, or simply as a means of filling up time. For me, social media had become a means of filling up empty space, a compulsive action that just felt automatic. Truthfully, I didn’t like how I felt when I would scroll through my so-called newsfeed, and would see everyone else’s “perfect” life.
In what areas of your life are you neglecting your God-given privilege to choose? In what ways have you given that power away to others? Too often, we allow people to talk us into doing things we know, at a gut level, are not right for us. Believe it or not, wise choices are possible every single moment of every single day.
Earnest desire and the power of conscious, thoughtful choice is a skill that you develop and practice over time. From your diet and exercise choices, to your choice in friends, partners, and experiences – the best ones are always the ones that you’ve peacefully and consciously chosen, and that are right for you. The time has come for you to start choosing people, things, and experiences that are life-giving, internally fulfilling, and ultimately life-changing. No more choosing things that are routine, compulsive, and/or “comfortable.” It’s time to pick clothes that look good on you; to choose thoughtful ways of giving your time and treasure; to take actions that make you happy; and to surround yourself with people, projects and career paths that are worth your time and your attention. Only you have the power and miraculous ability to discern what is right for you, what brings you energy, and what piques your interests as a human. Choose for no-one else but for yourself. From earnest desire comes the awesome power to choose what you really want for yourself. Nurture and develop that power every day, all day!
