I’m a big boy now.

What I love about gardening is doing it myself. What I love about decorating is doing it myself. What I love about money is buying stuff myself. Don’t you remember earning a few coins as a child and being so proud of yourself? You made money out of thin air, and then blew it in on a toy or Big League Chew!

I like doing it myself. I would never hire a gardener or a decorator or a set designer or a publisher! They’re going to make it look “professional.” Yuck. I like novitiate status. Jerry Seinfeld was a novice. His show was campy. He admitted he had no clue what he was doing for the first four years – a complete experiment – a kid messing around, learning and taking a “stab” at it, in the dark.

I know my writing has grammatical errors. I know my website looks “homespun.” I know my YouTube channel has poor lighting and is unedited.

When I released my first book, I was somewhat appalled at how childlike it looked. It is self-published, not much decor, and errors galore. But I did it myself.

Sometimes doing it yourself is the most rewarding. I’m not trashing fancy lights, make up, perfect and manicured lawns, etc., but it seems ridiculous to dress it up. I want to dress it down, bring it down to earth, make it from the heart and bring back the charm. If from the heart includes fanciness and edited “perfection,” fine. Be Martha Stewart.

But I like being a DIY pioneer. My house is an eclectic display of Ryan Hebert, not “Restoration Hardware” throwing up in my living room.

I don’t hide behind glitz.

I like the pioneering exploration. Experimentation is nothing to be ashamed of.

I don’t wanna to “grow up.” I’m a big boy now!
