A mission statement is a sentence or two which states why an organization exists. Somehow, when humans have a clearly stated “why” in their life’s pursuits, they are much more motivated and committed to being productive and helpful. The search for why is ultimately a search for joy, for peace, and for satisfaction. Isn’t inner joy, peace, and satisfaction the ultimate reasons for doing anything worthwhile in life? If not, why else do them? Our search for why can be linked for understanding ourselves as humans, more fully, and more deeply. This is our universal mission as humans. A strong mission statement is an aid to understanding who we really are. It should bring awareness to the ideals of cooperation, rather than the destruction of competition.
Let your mission statement relate to working towards a life of wholeness, pleasantness, happiness, and joy. Furthermore, help others see those potential “goodies” that are already inside of them. This will only be possible when basic needs are met, and we have a long way to go on that one! But once basic needs are met, there is so much work that needs to be done in reconciling mind and spirit within humans. Let your why be connected to living peacefully with other humans; to appreciating what you have; to letting go of what you cannot control; and to relieving suffering, both within and all around. That’s the greatest mission of them all, and it can be the backbone of everything you do. Shore up your mission statement to help people overcome selfish desire and meaningless competition, and to learn that there is something greater in life than the pursuit of “things.” Write a mission statement today, and let everything you do be connected to a why that brings people to a better awareness of who they really are.
