I always wondered why people ask God for things. And then, they sit back and wait for the Genie to perform. Why would you ask Omniscience for anything? When you ask for something, God is dumb. When you beg for something, God is deaf.
Seems silly to say God is all-knowing and all-present, then we get on our knees (at church) as ask for forgiveness and to win the lottery. We ask for healing. We ask for hurricanes and tornadoes to “veer” and to clobber our neighboring communities, not ours. Then we pray for the poor saps that got it. “Thank you God for sparing us.” “Help us God, for cleaning up the mess for our neighbors, parenthetically, we’re grateful you didn’t clobber us.”
We ask for money, not giving a rat’s ass if those around us are dead broke. We ask for death to skip over us or our loved ones in the hospital, just this one time, “Oh, please change the inevitable for me.”
For those who believe in this kind of God, every time they pray, they make God into an order-taker who sometimes helps or forgets. This image maddens me. God knows all, except the stuff I need. God can stop war. Except, who starts them? God can heal sickness. Except, what/who made you sick? God can take away your pain. Except, why I am suffering in the first place?
If you only contemplate God, you’d see She is an image, like a Genie you wish from. When you need and lack, your Genie doesn’t know your needs. She’s dumb to your needs.
Reflect on omniscience, omnipresence, and what “all” implies.
Asking for anything turns God into something “other” than all of it, from Alpha to Omega.
I shall not want. Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow. Need we beg? Surely, God knows unless you keep asking.
