The mind needs constant reassurance. It cycles through platitudes, “It’ll all be OK.” “Everything works out.” “Keep your faith, God will come through.” “All things work together for good.” These reaffirming statements wane, and the “what if’s” return, hungry for more words, like snacking after a cheap Chinese dinner. Circular assurances have an emptiness, leaving you craving an endless parade of the tritest “thoughts and prayers.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you.” Have you ever felt better when you knew someone was thinking and praying? Thoughts and prayers are platitudinal huff ‘n puff which emphasize how empty words are. We can’t put into words helplessness, how we have a lack of control, and how we really haven’t an inability to do anything when tragedy strikes.
Cards, letters, money, and the “outpouring of the heart” in physical gesture do nothing. “Get-well-soon” banners strung across hospital rooms are symbols of utter helplessness as the dying relieve themselves, mercifully moving towards The Light.
Reassurance is an inner calm attained by presence and slow allowance of the snow-globed mind to retreat. Inflammation is wordy. Healing is wordless. Homeostasis is a feeling brought to the mind, subvocally, in no words whatsoever. The mind is dis-eased. Reason will never bring you assurance anymore than the ink on a Hallmark card or the typeface of a Bible verse.
That still, small, minimally-undulating warmth returns in solitude, clear mindedness, and retreat. Healing is a serum that drips, tapping on the breaks of the mind. Homeostasis is obtained in stillness, slowness, and serenity. Sit quietly – breathe. Allow healing to return.
Allow inflammation to settle with patience and presence in any situation. Reassuring the mind stirs it up. Retreat and be healed. Assurance means being sure. Sure of what? The only healing balm is wordlessness and inner serenity.
Thoughts are prayers don’t heal, and homeostasis is only a word. True healing is the practice of silence.
