Why would another environment do anything for me? Unless I’m really eager to see and experience a foreign land, I don’t need to “get away.”
If you can’t enjoy your own company in the comfort of your own home, what makes you think you’ll enjoy your own company in Italy or the Swiss Alps? Likely, you’ll be crabby and irritated and will make worse company for yourself than you would being a grouse at home. At least you can keep it to yourself – not out and about, being crabby in Europe. Like every youngster, I used to experience wanderlust. But even in Germany, I kept poor company.
So many youngsters seem to be running. They have the heebie-jeebies and mistaken discomfort for their environment; however, this problem begins “at home,” being environed in a nagging head. We don’t like the entity who lives in the head. We nag ourselves. It’s like having a nagging wife. No wonder people cheat, they drink, do drugs, run, and do everything to “get away.”
Every time they get still, the nagging starts – “You should be doing this.” “Don’t forget about those bills!” “Why did you say that?” “How could you be so stupid!?” “Why didn’t you stay in school, you idiot.”
Running from the nag brings the nag closer, makes the nag worse, and your own company is insufferable, even in Zermatt, atop the Matterhorn. The nag loves suppression, doom scrolling, and running. Drink and do drugs, and it comes out even harder. Wanderlust is a desire to get away from the nag in the head. You don’t have to go far to “get away.”
The nag is you. Don’t believe it or run from it. Sit with it, notice the small segments of time when she shuts her flapper. Sweet relief. You don’t need to get away – just get still.
