It seems cute when a dog chases her own tail, getting into a frenzied pursuit of “the enemy.” She gets caught in a vicious cycle. Sometimes, she gets something stuck to her tail and she darts, frenetically fleeing from her own pulling and fear. Poor dog. She doesn’t know, does she?
We watch in jest as these innocent creatures pursue their own tails or flee from something unknowingly attached to them – like a renegade leash. We use this ignorance, however. We dangle carrots in front of donkeys to get them to move. Don’t you see what makes the world go round?
You can imagine seeing earth from a standstill, half in dark, half in light. This rotation can be imagined from a static perspective. This is how spiritual enlightenment comes full circle. You seem to be able to sense your own vicious cycle, fleeing and/or chasing your own doing. You can’t help it – it’s your karma. In some other realm, you step off the wheel, like taking your hands off. But you are still on the wheel, this time, it’s rotating “on its own.”
Most people haven’t caught on, still trying to “catch on.” They are still chasing their own tails, unknowingly, but viciously. If you are going to chase your own tail, why not let it happen on its own and enjoy? Many people haven’t caught up, they’re running from something tethered to them – death. Once you catch on and catch up, you still can’t capture it. You’ll just realize the jest of your own futility. Futile means “leaky.” The secret gets leaked, but cannot be re-exposed in more secret words. That’s why spiritual teaching seems circular and cryptic. But once the secret is leaked, you can enjoy a “hands off” rotational experience. There is no more need to be frenetic when you’re wise.
