When early humans roamed the earth, someone had a feeling to ride on the backs of “wild” animals. Can we trust wild animals? “Yes,” says the crazy pioneer. Someone had a hunch they could follow the stars to circumnavigate. Can we trust the stars? “Yes,” says the lunatic astrologist. Someone had a hunch that the wind could propel boats, not man-powered oars. Can we trust the wind? “Yes,” says the insane explorer.
Other people told me who I am, and I never looked into it. I had to learn that “nature” included me. I had to learn that silence, isolation, and stillness were consoling. I had to learn that I could trust. I had to see for myself what I doubted.
We must test our hunches. Colonel Sanders “tried” for 8 years to get KFC off the ground. Trying is leaning into the fear; that is to say that one tests his theories, his hunches. That is further to say, “Test me and the windows of heaven will pour blessings on your head.”
Are you afraid to test God? Are you afraid to experiment, play, and see if your hunches lead the charge? Are you afraid to follow the voice in the wilderness? Someone might think you’re crazy. Playing chicken with “God” is crazy until you realize crazy and sane are co-conspirators.
Those who have played chicken with God have realized there is no God, not in the sense most of us have come to understand. The real world is a hunch filled with provision, and the outer is a skeletal story of lack. Can we trust the hunch of the inner? “Yes,” says the crazy guru, “You can even trust the lie of the sinner. I’ve got a feeling about the real world.” To open the window of heaven, test the hunch. I’ve got a feeling. Chicken?
