I think nature wants us to know that we are alive. To sense your own aliveness takes some effort, however. If you want to sense your own aliveness, spend time just observing your breathing. If you observe it long enough, it almost feels as if you are “being breathed.” Almost everything about being alive, I’m convinced, is an automatic and very natural thing. It’s the mind that tries to get in the way of it all. There is simply so much we don’t know about the conscious process, and our part in it, if we even have one!
Anika Harris argues in her book, Conscious: A brief guide to the fundamental mystery of the mind, that when we make a choice, the process happens first inside of us, but outside of our awareness. In other words decisions are made within us before we become conscious of what choice we’re making. She says several times in the book that so much of the conscious process makes it seem that we are just going along for the ride. I was skeptical too, but there is compelling science to back this up! She writes that the human experience seems to be happening “behind the scenes,” and that we are not really sitting at the controls of our choices, so to speak. If that’s the case, why not sit back and relax? Why not just enjoy that you are “being lived” through the great creative process that brought you here in the first place. You can allow your life to unfold, naturally, as a quiet observer going with the flow. Just be a peaceful witness to the events of your life, don’t be in constant worry and condemnation of them. The intelligence of the universe is contained with you. You are merely an expression of that great I AM intelligence. Unlock that miracle of your nature, and watch, with wonder, the amazing things that it can do through you. But don’t meddle, or worry too much, you’ll only get in the way of who you really are.
