Life puzzled me until I realized I wasn’t following The House Rules.
Dogs poop inside the house, and they must be taught. People break the law, spouses cheat, and people die. They do duplicitous things, and the weather sucks sometimes. But all of these variables are admonishing. They teach us that we can’t be The Master in a controlling, dominating sense. Poop in the house and your nose will be rubbed in it. Speak rudely to enough people, and you’ll realize we don’t do it that way. Walk all over others, lie, dominate, manipulate, and get petulant, and you’ll realize we don’t do it that way.
We’re patient, and we forgive and love unconditionally. We do good to those who harm us. Those are the House Rules. If you are going to live under this roof, then you’re going to follow these rules. It’s as simple as not pooping in the house, but sometimes the urge overtakes. People are miserable because they’re nose is being held to the stench of their own actions. Another helping of humble pie? Mmmmm.
This is why we can’t have nice things! You haven’t learned The House Rules. There is a part of you that is The Master, admonishing, guiding, and teaching. Once you begin to submit to The Master, (rather than the petulant child) you’ll understand why “the leash” is leading you to where you don’t seemingly want to go – into the realm of the unconditioned. You’re supposed to go towards Love. I’m talking about the still small voice which guides, corrects, and “commands the beauteous files” as Henry Vaughan puts it.
House Rules are not optional. I don’t know why I can’t poop in the house or walk all over people. It’s better if I comply. If I do, I get lots of cuddles, treats, and exciting surprises and adventures. We must learn how we do things. House rules.
