Become the path.

My friend Ken and I love to travel together. That’s because we don’t make a rigid itinerary. We love to explore regions without much structure. Not everyone finds that fun. Some people can’t deal with openness or exploring the backwoods. But if you want to know if you’re on the right path, then stop looking for a path. Become the path.

Most of us, including yours truly, are preoccupied with direction – “knowing” the timeline, the schedule, and how it will unfold. This is a futile attempt to control life and its circuitous ways. In a famous Pointer Sisters’ song, they sing, “I’m about to lose control and I think I like it.” Some people don’t like it. But you’ll know you’re doing it right when you throw away this asinine idea of control. Seems foolish, doesn’t it? But you are a fool if you think you know the way with a compass, an itinerary, a watch, or a map. Those things are not the way – you are.

We love to set it and forget it, knowing when we’ll get there, knowing how we’ll get there, and knowing what we’ll do once we arrive. That means you’ve already done it in your mind – spoiler alert. The fun is not in the purview, but in the view upfront – into the darkness, cutting through the fog, the thickest part of the forest, or the blackest night! The purview seems more exciting than the view. But au contraire! Purview is from Anglo-Norman French purveu meaning ‘foreseen.’ Forget the foreseen and plunge into the unforeseen.

Honest living is improvisation. About to lose control? I think I like it! Your intuition cuts through the darkness, not your intellect. Enjoy exploring the backwoods where no path is carved. You’ll lead the way like an innocent child. That’s when life begins – when you become the path forward.
