The Real Purpose

You hear about the importance of finding your purpose. But we all have the same purpose in this world – to learn how to love.

When someone says you have to find your purpose, it can be misleading. They’re talking about a “surface purpose.” A surface purpose is what you might do by way of a profession. In my case it’s music, and now writing. I have a friend whose father sold insurance for State Farm, and he loved it. He really did think he was helping people protect their families by selling life insurance policies.

The surface purpose is action. It’s an expression of your inner purpose, which is to discover abiding love within you. Purpose goes deeper than the surface. The surface reason why you are here on this planet is from a sex act. But is that the real reason why you are here? Because two people “made” you? Don’t you think it goes much deeper?

No matter how you slice it up, you are here to learn how to love, not just because your parents conceived you and now you’re here. You are here to learn of your divine nature – that’s the deeper purpose. You are here to learn there is no you at all. We are all the Eternal Being pretending to discover itself for the first time. Love always was and will always be. It’s through the passage of ignorance into intelligence that one learns their true purpose, to connect to the Oneness of Being, the author of love itself.

Your surface purpose will help you express your love, if it’s something you love to do – even selling insurance. Just remember, your real purpose is to learn how to love deeply and express it unconditionally in all actions, thoughts, and words.
