It’s often said that finding your purpose is the greatest calling. How can you have a purpose when you are purpose in human form? To have a so-called purpose would mean that some part of you is purposeless. Is there something about you that is unintentional, accidental, or a fluke?
When I was a teacher, my so-called mission was to “give back.” I had incredible teachers. They took me under their wing, they guided me, and they led me to new heights. I was so overcome by those gestures of goodwill that I too wanted to be a mentor and a guide. But little did I know that I wasn’t giving back to anyone or anything. I was always giving to myself, a completeness that masqueraded as lack in “the world.” I was giving for my own enjoyment. There was no “back” or “lack.” I gave because I had unlimited supply of joy. I am perfectly whole and limitless.
What’s your mission in life? On the surface, it might seem like your mission is to do something, create something, or make something better – as if the world is lacking. But there is no mission like that per se. The world is whole and complete already, just like you. Your greatest mission then is – a submission to that Truth.
Purpose (as we tend to think of it) is our secondary mission. Submission is all there is. It’s not a will, but a willingness that you’re discovering. Ultimately, the “giving back” part is merely just giving into the fact that you aren’t real as an individual and “others” are simply you in disguise. What you give to others is a gift to yourself – even harmful acts. Submission helps you see there is no “back” in the “giving back.” There’s no repayment, no debt. There is only submission – your greatest mission.
