One day a friend of mine was chatting with her mom while they watched a soap opera. The father fussed at them for not paying attention to the story, and the mother turned and hissed, “Would you let me live my life like I want!” We still laugh at that story, but I think there is some wisdom to unpack.
If you had 10 days to live, how would you spend them? On day 1, I would grieve and accept. On day 2, if I had a job, I’d quit. On day 3 and 4, I’d take my friends out for lavish dinners. On day 5, I’d be sure to ride my bike – LOVE riding my bike. On day 6, I’d give away my things. On day 7, I’d throw a party. On day 8, I’d relax in my backyard and eat whatever I wanted to. On day 9, I’d spend the day at the beach – love the ocean. On day 10, I’d see as many people as I could who love me and tell them how much they meant to me. On day 11 – gone.
In those 10 days I’d do whatever I wanted. I would give myself whatever I wanted. I could also play it by ear and see how the days unfold, but I’d spoil myself and soak it all in. If you have 10 days or 10,000 days would it matter? Everyday is the last and first. There is no middle.
Ask God “Would you let me live my life like I want?”, and he’d say, “By all means!” The problem is that we think we have too many days ahead or behind, and we are postponing or we think it’s too late. But all you have to do is start now. You have all that you need. But do you believe it yet?
