The bookstore is filled with How-To books: How to Become CEO, How to Become a Straight-A student, How to Get Rich, and How to Become a Millionaire. The world is filled with suckers who erroneously believe that the how to’s are contained in a book, a video, or in an education. I’m not talking about how to fix a leaky faucet, but about the foolishness of how to become a CEO, a performer, a writer, or an executive. We fixate on the label, not the passion, the skill, the innate qualities, or the craft. What you become is from within. It just simply happens.
The hard way is to try to figure out how to become a professional athlete. The easy way is to love a sport, be passionate, practice and train everyday, and believe in yourself. The hard way is to try to figure out how to become rich. The easy way is to love money, be passionate about investing, and trust in your earning and saving potential. The hard way is to try to figure out how to become a famous actor. The easy way is to love acting, practice and learn about it, and take every audition you can find. The hard way is to try to figure out how to become a professional writer. The easy way is to love writing, get a piece of paper and write.
I don’t know how I became a professional musician, but it just came. It was time-consuming, but it came naturally to me. I couldn’t tell you how. I just practiced, was passionate about music, and believed in my ability. It was ingrained in me, and things just worked out. Truthfully, nobody worth their weight in salt knows how. When you get right down to it, it’s in you, and it just happens.
