Nobody knows how; just do it.

How do you make a decision? I know that seems silly, but get into the nuts and bolts if you can. You weigh your options, you look at the evidence, you vacillate from one possibility to another, and then you “make” your decision. But exactly how did you do that? You just do; but that never explains anything. When it comes right down to it, you just do everything.

How did the universe form? It just did – it’s mysterious. When you move your thumb or drive a car, how you do it is mysterious too. How do we beat our hearts, circulate our blood, or birth ourselves? Volition is an illusion, but it’s fun to participate in the illusion with a grain of salt.

How did you “arrive” at your favorite color? How are farts always funny? They just are. There’s no control because we don’t have the keys to the ignition, the point of origination. No one knows the difference between doing and happening. One feels out of control and arbitrary, and the other feels controlled and voluntary; but the source is the same. The origination is a mysterious “unknown.”

Knowing how is like breaking into the machinery. You’d ruin the game, and the quirky ups and downs of life would cease. Life is more like the relative control you feel when playing a video game, rather than the absolute control you’d have at the helm of running the world. The game programmers know the how and the outcome. They designed it from the end to the beginning, and you’re seeing it unfold as if it’s the first time. But something knows how before we are ever aware. Thank God, otherwise I might be taking myself too seriously. When farts aren’t funny anymore… GAME OVER!
