From anonymity to notoriety – the loss of self is the tragedy.

How easy it is to get away from yourself! When you start a creative enterprise, the child-like honesty starts to attract attention. But attention from others can lead you away from that fragile focal point of quiet truth.

Restaurants start off as “Mom-and-Pop” establishments, and these homespun ventures take a turn for the worst when they start franchising. They lose their joie de vivre when they go from being a “hole in the wall” to “Corporate Management.” I’ve seen it with artists and with content creators too. They are funny, charming, honest, and raw, then as the attention grows, so does the awareness of being “well-known.”

When something goes viral, it pulls the individual from their truth center. Everything moves from heart to head. Something “going to your head” is treacherous for a creative-type. You can lose your footing and disconnect from what brought you attention in the first place. This happens in relationships too. You fall in love, and your mate “sweeps you off your feet.” This is to say, like becoming famous, the attention of a lover can take your focus from your quiet core into a heady frenzy without you even realizing it. Practice knowing yourself by paying attention to your unique gifts and sensing where they are leading you. Don’t get pulled out to sea by a lover, a fan club, or by content that goes viral. The road from anonymity to notoriety if filled with traps. Stay close. Stay grounded. Stay quiet. Keep your creative source close. It always flows from that still, small voice that communicates in the quietness of your being. Connect to that rooted feeling daily. Many people get swept away in the clouds of attention and fall from grace. If you stay grounded, you’ll never fall because you don’t let yourself get “high” on the frenzy of notoriety.
