The only way to be great at anything is to love it, passionately. You may have to love it for a long time before you see any skills or results. If you want to be a good musician, love crafting music. You must love expressing yourself. If you want a good relationship, you must firstly love yourself and your partner, equally. You have to love working on problems and sorting out differences. You have to love all conditions of togetherness. All aspects of anything worthy can be loved, even difficulties. Difficulties can be solved by love.
When I was first learning to play the organ, I didn’t really care about the outcome. When I played, I was alive inside. The poor outcome could not deaden the love. The difficulties couldn’t deaden the love. Nothing could separate me from the love of making music.
Do it for the love of it, even if no-one sees it. Do it for love, even if it yields no worthy outcome or income. Do it for love, even if it’s hard. Do it for love because you’ll enjoy it. If you don’t love dieting, quit. If you don’t love exercise, quit. Life is too short to do things you hate to, or because you feel you “should.” I love to exercise. I love to clean. I love to garden. I love to entertain. I love to write. I write so much, I have volumes upon volumes of journals that no-one will ever read except me. There’s a famous Nike slogan that says, “Just do it.” Well I say too many people are just doing it. My slogan is “Do it because you love it.” Is there a better motivation than love?
