The Highest Uncommon Numerator and the Path of Most Resistance

Friday, September 1, 2023

We often think only of what’s easy. We think only of what’s possible and call it practical. Most of us go to the least common denominator and stay on the path of least resistance. If we perceive it as hard, effortful, time-consuming, against all odds, or we simply cannot conceive of how, we abandon the desire. The brain is hardwired to avoid work and/or pain. Avoidance is easiest. Why do the practical abdicate big goals, while creative people get into it and do amazing things that touch the world? It’s fear.

Do you consider yourself practical? Or, are you just like the millions of others who simply avoid the path of resistance? The resistance is an illusion, but a sign that you should probably face it, move towards it, and even go beyond it.

Resistance is fear. The path of least resistance is cowardly, shrinking back and going with what looks easy or seems possible. But I think we have it all wrong. Why not look instead at what you want. Do you really want to settle? Do you really want the so-called practical option? What you want is probably fraught with thoughts of resistance. The odds seem too great; there is no time; and there are too many variables, so I guess I’ll just do what’s easiest. Did you ever wonder why you had a desire in the first place? Dreams and goals always sit way above the least common denominator and in the middle of the path of the most resistance – not to tease you, but to show you that you are capable. Let the so-called practical people have the vanilla ice cream. You choose swirls, sprinkles, whipped cream, and a cherry on top! The resistance is an illusion. Meet your dreams and desires where they originate – not from the least common denominator but from the highest uncommon numerator.
