What you need is always there, right within.

We rely on caffeine to wake us up. We rely on so-called comfort foods to ease our discomfort. We rely on others to save us from the horrors of being alone. We rely on streaming services to binge watch shows to keep us from boredom. We rely on mood-enhancing drugs to keep our spirits up. We rely on alcohol to unwind after a grueling day. We rely on social media to keep us informed, to prevent the fear of missing out. We rely on our routines and our work schedules to keep us motivated, saving us from the fear of having unstructured time. We rely on our careers, our retirement accounts, and our net worth to relieve the fear of being poor. We rely on our partners to be our “other half” and to keep us from being insecure. We rely on the advice of others when faced with difficult decisions, for fear of making a “wrong” choice.

Who or what is your most reliable source – fear or yourself? If God is your most reliable source, is she “out there” watching over you? If she is, I’d be afraid she’d be too busy to protect me! As long as we believe our help is “from above,” we’ll never realize the truth.

The myth of dependency is perpetuated by people who leverage fear. If you rely on anything outside of yourself, then be afraid; but then fear becomes your god. Beware of politicians who leverage fear, promising easy solutions to complex problems. They understand the tendency of humans to feel needy for a hero. If you rely on anything outside of yourself, like other people or circumstances, then this false need is a god that secretly enslaves you. You’ll never learn that you are the hero. As Mel Robbins says, “No one is coming to save you.” Look within for the truth. You are the source and you alone. Put your faith inwardly, and the truth will set you free.
