More off, less on.

Everything is a wave, a constant “on-off” fluttering. Even so-called solid objects are moving so fast, they only appear to be solid, but they are mostly space. Think of a fan spinning very fast. It appears to be a solid disc, but if you put your finger through it, you’d soon regret it. But it’s more space than solid, if you could stop it from moving. Likewise, the reason why you cannot put your finger through a rock is because the particles are moving too fast.

We’re moving too fast, like a fan. There are no noticeable gaps in modernity. Constant noise, constant stimulation, and constant stuff make contemplation a thing of the past. Con-temple is the way to think of that. What ever happened to the silence and reflection in the temple? Even worship services are filled with constant words, music, noise – telling God what to do. What about listening? Where has that gone?

The only reason why you have anything that is “on” in your life is because lurking in the background is some “off-ness.” But we forget that, and our lives turn out to be this continuous stream of noise, connected by intervals of what appear to be “off,” but are consumed with TV, phone, or more “on.” The lost art of contemplation, quiet, and stillness need to somehow find their way back into our lives. We’re out of balance, and this is why anxiety, obesity, stress, and depression are on the rise. There is just too much “on.” Join with me in some “off” times. Sit with nothing in your hands, nothing before your eyes, and nothing in your mind. If anything is missing in life, it’s the “off” stroke of the pulsating wave of consciousness.
