You’re minding your own business, everything is humming along, and wham-o, something “happens.” A death, a loss, a mechanical failure, an idea, an opportunity – they all seem to arise, like a hiccup. We often brush off those seemingly surprising phenomena by saying they came “out of the blue.” What is this, this unnamable location we gloss over as “the blue?” Couldn’t you argue that everything comes from out of the blue?
Predictability is an illusion. It’s a mere expectation of the past. The past is known, the future is unknown; yet we live according to what we know – the past. The future is out of our hands. Stick to what you know – the past, and learn from it; then the future – leave it up to the wild blue yonder. You can be diligent and do your work, but don’t hold the future hostage. It’s wiggly and organic, and it will squirm out of your expectant mind. It does it’s own thing. Don’t panic.
A hatching egg is no more of a surprise to the universe than the breakout of a war or the collapse of the Stock Market. The secret is to marvel at the surprising nature of all future happenings. If they go your way, fine – but never expect them to. The very nature of life, a sign of vibrancy, is unpredictability. You don’t really want everything to be thus and so, do you? What a bore! Whatever is popping out all of these happenings, “out of the blue” surely has one intention – to keep you guessing, to get your attention, to keep you moving; so it must have some meaning. Don’t be surprised if something “out of the blue” starts to get your attention. Go with it. You’re not calling all of the shots – many of them are coming from the blue yonder.
