A former student once sent out an “Advice Survey” to all of her major professors about some choices she was facing. I question this methodology of outsourcing a decision, although I understand the sentiment. Ultimately a choice must rest well with you. We languish over choices only because we’re trying to avoid inner disharmony. But there are no mistakes! How can I say that? When you stop for a moment and look at every choice you’ve ever made, chances are you’ve found a way to thank God for them, even the so-called bad ones. If you haven’t found the wisdom or the lesson from a past choice, the gift is still there if you look.
All choices are leading you to your greatest good. Decision-making is not a zero-sum game, like you win some and you lose some. You’re winning all the time. Impulsive actions are a different story, and I’m certainly not talking about seat-of-your-pants living.
A quiet decision will yield better results, but that’s not what you’re after. You’re after better inner results no matter what the outcome. The purpose of life isn’t to dodge pain, but to learn how to deal with everything that comes your way. Life is for growing, and you will be led to experiences which allow for the greatest growth potential. So why grapple with a decision? You cannot abdicate nor outsource the responsibility of choice. Take the step, but never let the outcome dictate your sense of being OK. Recognize that divine potential is unfolding within you, and that none of your choices will lead you astray, even if at first they appear to be “rocky.” The rocky, rough places will eventually polish you to a higher luster. Trust in the ascending truth that is working within you in all moments. Everything works for your greater good and you can never avoid that by outsourcing your decisions.
