Think of all of the words you’ll use today! It’s interesting how people talk to their pets, isn’t it? Animal lovers speak so sweetly to their pets, but what about to their spouses, to their friends, and to the rude cashier at the supermarket? There is a drifting cat that hangs around my house. He’s not mine, but God’s cat. And even God’s cat needs food; so when he comes for a visit, I feed him. When he comes over, I’ll admit, I become a softy. My words sweeten, my voice pitches a little higher, and I get all mushy inside. I tell him how sweet he is, and I stroke his little face. Just my words alone make him purr, and he snuggles up to my hand.
O that I could be so gentle with the words I use in my own head, or in communication with other humans! God’s cat. God’s humans! Many humans are disturbed, however. Cats can be disturbed too, but not often, and just for a second or two. Then they get sweet again. If only we could be like cats, and if only we could use our cat voices to communicate with ourselves and with others – gently, sweetly, and lovingly.
It’s hard to use sweet words, especially to ourselves, and to those who are bitter. But disturbed people can start to purr, if you work with your words just a bit. “Nice kitty, you’re so sweet, aren’t you?” Now say that to yourself: “Nice______, you’re so sweet, aren’t you?” Aww, how precious. Examine the quality of your words today. Be creative. Add a little warmth, pitch up the tone, sprinkle in some depth, inject a little humor, and voila – you’ve got the ingredients of a charming and romantic story! So what’s your story? If you speak sweetly, the world will purr. If you reach out, it will snuggle up to your hand.
