How to prepare for change.

We have a hard time with the “unimaginable,” the “unthinkable,” and the “inconceivable.” No one could have imagined how disruptive a global pandemic would have been. There were few who imagined that gay couples could marry in the U.S. There were few who imagined self-driving, electric vehicles. Fifty years ago, hardly a soul imagined a cellar phone, a hand-held, mini-computer connected to so many forms of communication and a vast network of jaw-dropping information. But, the only reason why those things exist is because someone dared to imagine them first. They stretched the limits of the “unthinkable.”

Stretch your imagination, don’t resist it. Blockbuster resisted online streaming, and they met their ultimate demise. Kodak resisted digital technology, and is no longer. Newspapers resisted digital formats and collapsed like a house of cards. Car manufacturers resisted electric, self-driving vehicles, and Tesla emerged as the fiercest and fastest-growing competitor in the industry. Society resisted gay marriage, and now it’s commonplace, forever changing public opinion on sexuality.

Possibility thinking helps you get ready, so it’s not such a shock when radical change arrives. It lets you envision how you’d overcome, stay strong, get creative, and solve complex problems that might arise. Just because you don’t want to think about it, won’t keep it from happening. Reality intrudes on those who resist, falsely believing that everything is going to stay the same. Think about where you were 10 years ago. Is there anything your 10-year-ago self would be surprised at? Reality is often a shocker, isn’t it? Don’t let it be – open yourself to all sorts of “wild” possibilities. Imagine how you would thrive, adapt, grow, and change. Get ready for change by stretching your imagination – it’s the only way to absorb the impact of the future.
