When you put yourself “out there,” with acts of courage, by stepping into the spotlight, articulating your ideas, extending a helping hand, or expressing yourself – you will have to play defense as you begin getting closer to victory. If you don’t want to play the defensive team, then stay on the bench. It’s cozy there, comfortable, safe. Your defeatist thoughts, fear of criticism, bad breaks, and fear of rejection – that team has some big, mean, ugly players. It takes two things to win: 1.) A belief that you can, and 2.) stepping out, onto the field. Are you ready to play, yet?
Maybe coach is saying to you, “Get out there.” It might be a circuitous path, with a few tackles, but there will be an opening to your prize. You just have to believe that you can win that loving relationship that you’ve longed for; you can have that amazing promotion that you deserve; you can take that extraordinary opportunity that’s come to you; or you will see that brilliant idea turn into a fortuitous enterprise. But fair warning, putting yourself on the field, especially as you encroach the end zone, will invite Goliath and all of his ugly buddies, poised to stop you. From the sidelines, you’ve seen others score, big time. And it’s OK to be a cheerleader. But if you want to score, the end zone is not in the bleachers. Maybe it’s your turn to put on a uniform? Don’t worry, it comes with all of the protective gear that you need. When you get close enough to victory, you’ll see that the ugly faces of the opposition were nothing more than an illusion, anyway. Don’t retract every time the defensive team pushes back. They’re just trying to scare you, but that’s never enough to stop you from scoring, big time.
