Being right ain’t that important

17 December 2020

It feels so good to win an argument, or to prove a point. It feels so good to defend your position on something, and it feels even better to point out when others are wrong. But why place so much emphasis on being right? Why do you even care about being on the winning side of an argument? Today is a great day to let go of the need to be right. Being right is simply not that important. Mounting a convincing argument is simply not worth your time and effort. Instead be a peace-maker today. Be an innocent bystander, a peaceful observer, or maybe even a creative facilitator.

People who have the gift of bringing others together gave up the need to compete, long ago. Be the kind of person that creates community, that finds common ground, and that listens compassionately. When your goal is to bring others together, you’ll never need to be right again. Meet people where they are in life. Realize that they struggle with insecurities too. Today, call a truce with yourself and with others. Put up no defense. Be the force that connects and builds, rather than the force that competes. True winners restore faith in people and build up the confidence of those around them. Today, instead of being right, be compassionate and encouraging. You might be surprised at how much more powerful being compassionate is over being on the winning side of an argument.
