The nourishment of gratitude.

The quality of your life is determined by how you feel. It’s not what you have or what don’t have. If you consider that you have a good life, it’s because you feel happy – plain and simple. If your life is a mess, it’s because your feelings are a mess. Your feelings may be nagging you, making you think there is something “wrong.” But what’s actually wrong is how you feel.

Feeling poorly is a kind of poverty. It’s a destitution that stops the world from anything that’s worth living for. Its the depletion of creativity, the anathema to gratitude. It’s polarizing, in the sense that you realize that the universe actually is binary – good/bad; pretty/ugly; have/have not; rich/poor, etc. To what extent do you choose to live on the opposite side of the positive polarity? What good comes from gravitating towards the apocalyptic end of the emotional spectrum?

The negativity bias of the brain may no longer be a useful, survival tool for humans. Perhaps you are imposing some negative feelings upon a situation that is otherwise harmless. Perhaps you’re dramatizing something by polarizing it, when indeed it isn’t quite that dire. See if you may be generating negative feelings for no other purpose than to scare yourself, or to prove that your negativity bias is “right.” Neutralize your negativity. Better yet, slide towards the positive side. This takes purposeful effort. There is something there to find, if you look. Look carefully at what you blame. Examine the thoughts as they come to you, but pay attention to the ones that make you feel miserable. If thoughts are causing it, then they can also be used to help. The universe is binary, use it to your advantage to see the brighter side of the spectrum. Gratitude is great place to start.
