A personal finish line: Setting your eyes on your own reward.

Life can be full of obligations that other people have set for you. Work, school, family – they all have obligations, agendas, and deadlines. Do you get weary of all of those tasks and obligations? Part of that resistance is because you haven’t set any finish lines or goals for yourself. It may feel you’re living your life for others. But perhaps it’s time to set some goals for yourself?

One of the best things that you can do for yourself is to actually create work that you want to do! That’s right, create work. I know it sounds outlandish, but if all of your work is for others, it gets wearisome. Creating goals, setting dates, accomplishing something personal, something that comes from your heart and is for yourself – that could be lacking in your life. Crossing your own finish line, accomplishing something that you set your mind to are the ingredients of happiness. If your life is filled with crossing the finish line that everyone else has set for you, you’ll burn out.

There’s nothing more motivating than having a clearly articulated goal, one that is for your own good. Work, school, family obligations – those are noble efforts and necessary ones, but you need to have your own goals – one’s for your best interest.

If you have an idea, then set a goal for yourself. Even the smallest finish line, one you set and cross for yourself will make a huge difference in how you feel. It’s OK to fulfill all of your other obligations, but create a finish line that would make you happy, when you cross it. Live for yourself first, create time to fulfill your own dreams first, and then you’ll find energy to cross everyone else’s finish lines.
