The art of management: mind, body, soul.

Management is the process of dealing with or controlling things or people. Managers maintain order by remaining in charge of whomever or whatever they have been given responsibility over. In your own life, what have you been given responsibility over? Are you responsible for the actions of others, or the weather, or other uncontrollable things like traffic? Life gives you a body, so manage it well with plenty of sleep, exercise, hydration, and nutrition. Life gives you a mind, so manage it with good rest (mediation) and useful, educational materials. Life gives you a soul, so manage it by developing a strong and meaningful spiritual life. Life also gives you all sorts of external, uncontrollable affairs, so manage only your reaction to what’s outside of your jurisdiction.

You maintain order by remaining in charge of your emotions, your reactions, and your inner dialogue. The manager of a business gets to prioritize the agenda. If the employees are in charge, or you just put out one fire after the next, you’ve got problems – the tail is wagging the dog. But if you maintain order of your inner condition, the outer seems to magically fall inline, and it begins to work more smoothly and cooperatively with you.

The responsibility of your inner wellness is yours – don’t give it away to others. You also don’t have to be a bullheaded dictator, or a forceful manager of yourself either. You don’t have to arm twist yourself into better mental health, physical condition, or to pretend to be happy. You just need to recognize what you are responsible for, and prioritize your efforts. A good manager knows what he or she is responsible for, and they stick with those things – they don’t micromanage nor meddle in the affairs of upper management! In your own life, learn what you are responsible for, manage yourself responsibly and resourcefully (and with a good attitude) – and leave the rest to manage themselves. Managing yourself is a full-time job – you don’t need anymore responsibility than that.
