Today welcomes you. Did you say, “Thank you?” Today gave you free admission to it. Whatever the day contains, welcome it! How many days have welcomed you, so far? As of this writing (which happened in October), I have been alive for 17, 423 days. I have a finite number of days left on the planet, and while that might seem grim, it’s a good reminder that I need to be more gracious to my host. Those days took me in, gave me content, yet I tossed it all aside for the future. When those future days arrived, they weren’t any better. During regretful times, I wanted days back, so I lived in the past – tossing aside another today. So many today’s tried to welcome me, but I simply said “I’m waiting for a better one to come along.”
How many days are you discarding for a higher face value? Days cannot be discarded onto a heap. Your 30,000th day, should you be so fortunate to see it, is no more precious than your 17,423rd day, unless you start to notice its amazing attributes.
To live for the weekend, to “get through” until retirement, or to endure, brings you nothing but a trashed day. But in which specific day will you feel alive, to love life, to love who you are, to appreciate who loves you, or to marvel at what amazing things you can do? I’ve discarded too many days, trying to find the magic “one.” I’ve spent too many days feeling poorly. I did not see the love of this day, welcoming me into its embrace. Will you be a gracious recipient of today’s gift? It’s so special, but moreover, it’s guest, you, are the most precious part of what it offers. How many more days will it take before you notice the gifts of today?
