It’s easy to get paralyzed, to think you can’t contribute or do anything of great significance for fear of being criticized. A bad review, a bad grade, or an unkind critique can be crippling to the unwise. Approval of others is a slippery slope. I get that humans are herd animals, and that we love to be accepted. But why is fear of rejection a reason to not express yourself? I think it all begins with a deep trust in your goals and desires. Your goals are inscribed within you and are meant for your benefit, ultimately, so don’t let the reaction of others sour your day.
It’s good to help. It’s good to want to make a difference, but you cannot guarantee that others will benefit. You just have to put it out there and see. Someone will always be disappointed. Just don’t disappoint yourself! There is no way to please everyone, but there is always a way to be pleased in yourself, in your effort, and for your innate joy and satisfaction of getting out there and trying. Results come to those who take chances, tossing aside rejection if it comes.
It’s not selfish to enjoy. It’s tantamount to success. If you enjoy helping, do it! If others refuse your help, or disagree with your method, fine. Did you enjoy yourself in the process? That’s the key. You win if you are happy reaching out, trying to bring some joy into the world. Express yourself creatively and let yourself relish in the act, not desperately hoping for some “result” of your expressiveness. Someone will receive it, but not everyone. Don’t let the reactions of others stop you or dissuade you. Reach in and see what makes you happy, then put it “out there.” Not everyone will accept your effort and work, but that’s fine – the joy of expressing yourself is simply enough.
