Eliminate choice; follow the script; give your mind a break.

So-called decision-making is nothing more than vacillating, stewing, and switching rapidly from one thought to another. The mind is never satisfied, when there’s no time to focus or to think quietly. One way to free up time and space is to give yourself fewer options when you’re planning your day, your week, or beyond. Another way to help is to automate tasks by writing things down and following the script, not the mind bouncing from one thing to the next.

Eliminating choice isn’t revolutionary, but it can be useful to reduce stress. For example, Steve Jobs wore a black shirt and jeans everyday. He gave away his choice to pick out his daily outfits. One less choice – more freedom, no stress! I wonder if there are things in your life that you can eliminate the choices for. Social media platforms, news sources, apps, games, etc. What about eating? Perhaps you can make one meal the same for a while – but plan ahead!

The key is to look ahead, and to narrow down or eliminate your choices. You may also want to schedule certain times that you do things, rather than waiting for yourself to feel like it. Chances are, you won’t feel like it! Allowing the mind to “juggle” everything, all at once could be adding unnecessary stress to your life. Take away these vacillating thoughts by creating a planned-ahead, choice-eliminated script, and this might put your mind at ease. It’s easier to follow a script and to have fewer choices than to mull and stew over how much is available to you. When the mind is free from having to make decisions, you can create brain processing power to think creatively, to pray, to focus, to meditate, or to come up with new ideas. Give yourself fewer options, then follow the plan and schedule. No more juggling – that’s for the circus.
