The awe and wonder of the natural world is in the mirror.

We don’t cherish the earth, and it’s dying. William Shatner recently experienced this when he went into outer space and looked down at the earth. All he saw was death, and the experience overwhelmed him. This is called the “Overview Effect,” and it’s been experienced by many others who have seen the earth from above. But you don’t have to go into outer space to sense that the earth is sick. You can see it in your fellow humans, who see themselves as separate from nature, a random fluke with nothing special about who or what they are. Humans are a product of creation’s goodness, yet we don’t cherish this natural marvel of who we are, and we don’t care for or cherish ourselves. How could we miss this?

Since you cannot go into space, then look up into space. Look into the sky and all around you. The natural wonder is breathtaking. The picture of nature is stunning, mesmerizing, invigorating, and inspiring. Look at the night sky, the vegetation, the sunsets, and the sunrises. Marvel at the beauty of nature’s handiwork. Isn’t it amazing?

It’s easy to look out and to see natural beauty. It’s so much harder to see it in the mirror. But you are worlds beyond the sky, more stunning than any flower or mountain. Plants, children, and pets thrive when you notice their beauty and care for them lovingly. The earth would come alive again, if we would do the same. But wouldn’t it be nice if we saw that natural wonder in ourselves, and we cherished and cared for it? What a world we may have if we could see the amazing, natural marvel of creation’s best work in ourselves. I am a product of nature’s best handiwork and so are you. Cherish, marvel at, and care for it before it becomes sick and dying.
