A demand has a rigidity that sets you up for disappointment when (not if) things don’t go your way. Of this I can be sure, things won’t go your way all of the time. A preference however, is held lightly, almost with no force at all. There’s nothing wrong with a preference. But you cannot die by those preferences, hold them in such high regard that they make you go berserk when life doesn’t work out. If you find yourself in a situation where your preference is being denied, then all you can do is do what you can do. Ruminating about not getting your way is only making things worse.
The universe will yield to your preferences most of the time, remarkably. What more could you ask for in an imperfect world? If you demand that you get your way all the time, you’re asking for trouble. At any moment in time all you are capable of doing is what’s right in front of you. You cannot set out to be a great scholar. All you can do is read a book. You cannot set out to be an entrepreneur. All you can do is to learn to think creatively. If the idea works and makes millions, good – but don’t demand everything in one fell swoop.
Someone once said, “The best way to make God laugh is to tell her your plans.” Demand it go your way, and life will take you on a side trip. Those side trips will also be part of your growth too, believe me. Your demanding ways might not be the best way. If it’s your way or the highway, you might consider taking the “high” way, which is usually the best way, and likely a way you haven’t even thought of.
