Today’s special: A nice big helping of humble pie, and it’s FREE.

Whenever you see yourself as “special,” you put in an order for a helping of humility. Humble pie is a tasty treat that is dished up by circumstance, each time that you see yourself as “different.” When you feel like you’re being singled out by life, either as a victim of it, or as a victor, you’re looking for attention. You may get, but the attention that you need is to be knocked off of your perch and into the realm of wholeness.

Whether you feel like you’re on the top of the world, or at the bottom of despair, you’ve put a bullseye on your head. Why? You want the world to see you. But the key is that you need to see the world as equally nourishing to all creatures. You need to notice the wholeness of life itself, not separateness. Wholeness sees no difference between people. To the universe, the day and the night are both alike. Gain and loss are as normal as breathing in and out. Each creature is never separate from its source, no matter what polarities seem to exist within the system.

Humbleness is a form of neutrality, a form of invisibility that has no viewpoint, no opinion, no status. It’s freely admitting that you know very little. It’s a sweet liberation to know you’re never sure of anything. It’s letting go of the false, pretentious “need” to be right. It’s a release of control. It’s a fundamental realization that you are just like your neighbor, even if they vote for your political opponent, wear a turban on their head, or have darker skin. It’s commonalities that you’re looking for, not attention. If you climb up to your perch, single yourself out and say, “Look at me,” life will swat you down and feed you another slice of humility, until you get it. Today’s special is humble pie – a decadent reminder that you’re not special. Nobody is.
