Today will eventually become a memory. But there is no reason to make today into a yesterday before it’s ready, and before you notice something that makes you feel good. If you live only to “get through” the day, you’re closing the door on the possibilities that lie in what remains of your time. When you rush, you’re cheating today, creating premature memories – forecasts of getting all of your work done is a goal to nowhere. It’s creating a pile of yesterdays that run together, seamlessly, boring, monotonous, and routine. Is today going to be added to the pile of wasted yesterdays?
The goal of today is not to get through it, to just see it to its eventual end. The goal of the week isn’t to get to the weekend, although many think it is. That’s marking time, and marking time isn’t really living. When time flies by, you miss your opportunity to feel happiness, to experience the pleasantness of being well-adjusted, and to express yourself as a joyful being. If your day started with fretting about getting to its end, then you’ve created premature memories that have already converted today into another wasted, and forgotten yesterday – a trash heap of blurry, meaningless, and forgettable moments.
But what if today could be a time where you could savor the flavor of living? What if today you could create good experiences that would be turned into cherished memories, good vibes, good feelings, good energy, and good happenings? Compounded over time, creating and noticing that good energy will build a savings account of blessing, not a garbage heap of waste. Don’t waste today. Take full advantage of living. Keep today’s door open for as long as it’s still, today. Today will eventually close on its own, but don’t end it prematurely, and don’t let it end before creating something worth remembering. There is always enough time left to salvage today and to turn it into a treasure, rather than throwing on the garbage heap of yesterday.
