Beliefs without benefits. Do we really need more of them?

I recently read of a doctor who was speaking to his dying, Covid-19 patients. Even on their deathbed, they believed that the vaccine was somehow harmful, or part of some insidious conspiracy theory. But what could be more harmful than death? – a belief that has no benefit to the living.

The brain “loves” to do what’s easy. For example, if you believe eating right is hard, you’ll find it easier to eat poorly. If you believe exercise is hard, you’ll find it easier to sit on the couch. If you believe you won’t amount to anything, it will be easier to just be sedentary. If you believe you’re unlovable, then it will be easier to remain single. If you believe you have no talent, then it will be easier not to develop one. The mind loves to confirm what you believe, especially if it’s negative and easy!

How do all of your negative beliefs actually help the world? How can believing that you are worthless ever help you? Talents and skills are refined in the belief that you’ll improve over time, and that you can learn anything, if you put your mind to it. If you believe that you can learn, then you can. If you believe that you can thrive, then you can. If you believe that you can be happy, then you can. If you believe that you can make a difference in the world, then you can. Start using belief as a helpful tool, not as a flimsy excuse to do nothing.

You don’t have to continue to believe that you are just a passenger in this world. It’s a matter of catching yourself believing that everything is negative, routine, limiting, or confining. Choose to believe in something better, something more powerful, and mostly, choose to believe in something that’s more useful to humanity! Believing that everyone around you is at fault is also another terrible belief that doesn’t help you.

Break the barriers of limitations and excuses, and expand the repertoire of your beliefs into those that will serve you and your goals, not those that hinder you and make you feel awful. There’s something more worthwhile, and better to believe in – go figure it out.
