I once heard Will Smith say that he avoids junk food by saying to himself, “I love you too much to let you eat that pizza.” At what point in your own life do you take over from your parents and learn to toughen up your self love? Parents always want what’s best for their children. In our own lives, we have to become responsible for being interested in what’s best for ourselves. Some people never learn this. They take better care of their business, other people, and even their pets, more than they do themselves.
Like a good parent who has their child’s best interest at heart, so too must you have your best interest at heart. A good parent doesn’t protect their child from life’s lessons however. They just put their foot down, when they sense that a child is being just plain reckless, or has a disregard for safety. Learning to sense when you’re causing harm to yourself, and when you have no discipline is very difficult. It’s easy to get distracted with excuses. It’s easy to ignore your better judgement and to put yourself last. Children rebel against the better judgement of their parents, immature adults rebel against the better judgement of their intuition.
A mature intuition is one that puts your wellness and what’s best for you as a priority. If you need sleep, put your foot down and discipline yourself to go to bed. If you need eat better, put your foot down and love yourself enough to consume foods with better nutrition. If you need to remove yourself from a harmful situation, put your foot down and put a stop to it. Intervene, if you have to, but do it because you know what’s right. Sense what’s right, and parent yourself. But remember, that you do have the maturity to figure out what’s best for yourself. Give yourself the right kind of parental guidance, learn from your mistakes, but above all – pay attention to your intuitive guidance system. It knows better than your demanding, people-pleasing, childish whims.
