Hold on tight – to the right things.

Tuesday, March 15, 2022

We all have the tendency to hold on too tightly to things, like possessions, or relationships. When your grip is too tight, the universe will eventually loosen that grip for you, through challenge or loss. It’s eventually death that will make you loosen your grip on everything, so why not let go, sooner? Shock and disbelief when things end, or when loss occurs, are simply a result of being totally unaware of the ephemeral nature of the physical world. Everything comes to an end, even if you clutch to them.

Holding on to regret, routine, sour feelings, or to material possessions – all lead to trouble. We cling to other people, and we cling to our obsessive thoughts. We cling to them because they feel comfortable. But comfort is also ephemeral. Holding onto the temporary is nothing more than sand falling through the space between your fingers.

Grip tightly, instead, to the lasting qualities of those things that are in eternal supply. Hold onto that which does not change – like love, which never leaves you, never abandons you, and never disappoints you. Hold firmly to generosity, and to peace – you’ll never run out of those. Hold firmly to paying attention, carefully devoting yourself to one thing at a time Your attention span is definitely limitless. Hold firm to patience, never letting that one go! But above all, hold onto hope and make that your prized “possession.” The things you’re supposed to hold firmly within you will become clear, when you see the ephemeral quality of most of what you cling to in your life. But loss of the temporary isn’t loss at all – it’s a form of gain. It’s a gain of understanding. More understanding leads to more peace. So hold onto the peace which passes all understanding, and the other things can slip right through your fingers. So let them go!
