When you play music, the purpose of the activity is not getting to the end. If getting to the end were the goal, only the fastest players would be the best. Dancing is similar. When you’re dancing, your goal is not to get to a particular spot on the dance floor. Music and dancing are real-time, present-moment “happenings.” When you allow yourself to merge with the experience of music, the happening itself and who you are, are fused together in such a way that there is no difference between you and that which we call music.
When the mind gets quiet and stops trying to label every tiny detail, the eternal dimension of the present moment expands. You realize that your eyes give the sun its ability to shine light onto the world. Your skin is what gives the temperature the ability to be warm or cold. Your tongue is what gives food the ability to taste so good, and so on. All your organs, cells, and your entire physiology are working in perfect order, and for your benefit – all without a need to be “explained.” Likewise, the natural flow of your life is working for your benefit.
The more aware that you become of this awesome, natural flow of “being lived,” you can free yourself from need to explain what life is and what life is about. When you explain it, rationalize it, or make a conclusion about it, it vaporizes. Those conclusions and explanations will never satisfy you. Conclusions are illusions, but you are very, very real. That which is experiencing the present moment, with no mentally drawn boundaries, is who you are. But even the “conclusion” of that previous sentence falls short of the truth. Don’t jump to conclusions. Don’t rush to the final cadence of your inner music. Let go and allow the music to keep playing and enjoy the dance, every single day you are alive.
