Everything is an assumption. You only think you know, but frankly, you don’t know anything. We’re totally blind, yet we walk around as if we can see clearly into the future. Worrying and assuming are different sides of the same, foolish coin. We worry as if we can clearly see what’s coming, in a tragic way. We assume as if tomorrow will be here for us, in a presumptive way. But only the foolish worry, and the foolish assume. The wise don’t know a single thing.
Wisdom comes from the space of uncertainty, not fear or assumption. Wisdom is comfortable with uncertainty, because that’s all there really is. The wise want tomorrow to bring what it wants. You don’t know that if you leave your house today, and drive down the highway, that you could be gone in a flash. Death often comes like a thief. And the wise are even open to all that life brings, and anything in between.
In the space of not knowing, lies a peace that allows the wise to enjoy life, to get comfortable. I’m not referring to ignorance. I’m referring to child-like openness, a posture that says “yes” to all that could be. What could be is unknown, right? That’s vulnerability at its best – an ironic place for strength. The wise are open to all that could be, never desiring what should be, and never worrying about what might be. Wisdom “knows” that the human brain doesn’t know, it only assumes. Wisdom knows that reality can change on its own, that life itself is a miracle, and that a long life is the miracle of miracles! Uncertainty is an openness to the inevitability of change – all change, not just what might be considered “desired.” The unknown is wonderfully kind to those who welcome it, even if it includes death. Get comfortable. Open yourself to that great wilderness of uncertainty. It’s where you’ll find God waiting for you.
