You can never give anyone what you think they need. You can only attend to yourself.

Too much of what we do, and what we say, is falsely motivated in the name of so-called selflessness. The best desire is motivated by loving intention towards yourself. If “desire” comes from pitying others, or from obligation, or from guilt, it’s really manifested in resentment, not love, nor peaceful honesty. All honest actions, all truthful words, and all authentic desires spring forth from self respect. And love comes from a quiet, still and peaceful inner state. When you believe you are “satisfying” others, you’re lying to yourself. Another person’s joy, peace and life-fulfillment is not your responsibility. You can never perceive another person’s inner experience of satisfaction. You can only know your own thoughts, your own desires, and your own feelings of fulfillment.

You are the only person that knows what satisfaction truly is. Giving is wonderful, but only when it satisfies and enhances your loving desire – not your guilty obligation. Do not appease and try to satisfy the petulant demands of others. Do not appease and try to satisfy the petulant demands of what pops into the top of your head. This type of “giving” is an insidious infection whose antidote is in turning inward, towards self-examination. Turn your thoughts and desires towards YOU. If prompted from inner stillness and peace, you’ll know what you are to give, but for your own self-love, fulfillment, and joy. And don’t ask anyone for anything, unless you really need their assistance. Ask yourself instead, “Do I need this from them? Do I really need this from this person?” More than likely, you do not need much of anything – unless you’re moving a heavy dresser, and you need a strong person to help you! The only need you can ever truly attend to, is the need to be true yourself. Attend to that need every single moment and life will flourish.
