The quest for “finding your purpose” is a hot topic these days. I think that purpose is simply recognizing that the ego is dying. The ego is that part of you that keeps you separate from others. When the ego is starved, it leaves a space and a desire to bring people together; however, if the collective ego is being fed continuously, it can become an epidemic. Don’t contribute to this negative energy on the planet. When the ego is overfed, one becomes blind to purpose. If one is egotistically obese, they cannot see that their quest in life is purely for selfish gain. If you are one who struggles with finding your purpose, perhaps the following, simplified principles can help you navigate your quest.
1.) Identify things in your life that are feeding your ego, and go on a strict diet! 2.) Develop a skill. Become good at something – working with people, listening compassionately. Or become good at some kind of trade – cooking, music, writing, etc. Then, devote time to it, practice it, learn to improve it, bit by bit. 3.) Finally, use that skill to connect people. In other words, use your skills to starve the ego. Don’t use your skills to separate others, or to “get ahead” in life. Use your skills to unify people.
When you help others see the benefit of “us” rather than “I,” you’re connecting to the simple principles of purpose, as outlined above. Your focus and your energy go into the collective effort, rather than the selfish effort. When you make a contribution to that which binds humans together, your purpose becomes active. It will kindle a passion within you, and it will become contagious. It will bring new energies into your life. It will make you feel like you’re on God’s team, rather than just fighting for yourself. It will make you feel like your effort is on something useful for humanity. Your purpose is a process that evolves as the ego diminishes, so be receptive to its call to you. Reflect on these simple principles today, and begin to develop your purpose!
