The effort of the upside – it’s not all that bad.

Whatever you need to fix, whatever problem you have to solve, or whatever you see as wrong with your life, is not the whole story. It’s only one side of it. When you know what’s wrong, you must also must know what’s right, at least eventually. The upside and the downside live inextricably woven together and cannot be separated. Silence cannot be separated from noise. Good cannot be separated from evil. Ups cannot be separated from downs, and so on. They coexist, and it’s difficult to recognize how they live in tandem.

If you can know what’s wrong, then you have what it takes to know what’s right. What’s right is always available, just as much as what’s wrong, but you have to see it. If you’re feeling poorly, then there is a way to notice that, and there is a way to flip it. If you know you feel bad, then you know it’s opposite, so catch yourself, and turn it around.

Seeing what’s wrong is one-sided. Pay attention to how easy it is to get stuck on the downward slope – the gravity will quickly pull you under. The upward slope requires a bit of effort, however. Effort is not negative, you just think it is. Effort is simply to push against the gravity, the natural, negativity bias. There is an effort to feeling good, to seeing what’s right, and to begin the climb. Pushing against resilience is the only way to strengthen your muscles, spiritually and physically. It’s not negative, it’s neutral. The secret is to apply effort to finding the upside. You’re so close to finding the positive in life, you just need a little more effort. When you see what’s wrong, you’re already halfway to the bright side. Just take the first step.
